Rani’s Resilience: Empowering Women for Climate Resilience in the Sundarbans
Empowering Women for Climate Resilience: In the Sundarbans region, Self-Help Groups (SHGs) such as Pather Sathi are at the forefront of climate adaptation efforts. Through innovative initiatives, these groups are training women to establish mangrove and inland plant nurseries, thereby fostering resilience, economic empowerment, and environmental conservation.

Meet Rani, a member of Pather Sathi SHG in the Sundarbans. Rani, like many women in her community, faced numerous challenges due to climate change-induced disasters such as cyclones and rising sea levels. With limited economic opportunities, she struggled to provide for her family.

However, everything changed when she joined Pather Sathi. Through their training programs, Rani learned about the importance of mangrove restoration and sustainable agriculture practices. Equipped with new skills and knowledge, she spearheaded the establishment of a mangrove nursery in her village.

Despite initial challenges, Rani’s perseverance paid off. The mangrove nursery not only helped to protect her village from erosion and storm surges but also provided a source of income for the community. By selling mangrove saplings to nearby villages, Rani and her fellow SHG members were able to generate sustainable livelihoods while simultaneously contributing to environmental conservation efforts.
Today, Rani’s story serves as an inspiration to many women in the Sundarbans region. Through the collective efforts of SHGs like Pather Sathi, women are not only adapting to the impacts of climate change but also leading the way towards a more resilient and sustainable future for their communities.
