Climate Adaptive Natural Farming

BAIKUNTHAPUR TARUN SANGHA

The Sunderban Delta, renowned for its expansive mangrove forests, plays a pivotal role in balancing the region’s ecology while supporting myriad lives. The unique confluence of freshwater and saline water creates an environment rich in biodiversity, but it’s also sensitive to human intervention.

Addressing this, BTS’s Sustainable Agricultural Project (SAP) offers an approach tailored to the Sunderbans. It seeks to align the preservation of natural assets with the well-being of the local communities. BTS understands that the locals, with their deep-rooted connection to the delta, are essential partners in conservation. Through SAP, BTS aims to fuse their efforts with local insights, promoting practices that conserve resources and maintain harmony with the mangroves.

A major initiative is their promotion of native crops. These crops naturally thrive in the Sunderbans, reducing the need for excessive water or chemicals.

BTS’s introduction of Community Seed Banks and Grain Banks showcases a community-centric approach. These banks not only ensure food availability but also help retain the region’s farming heritage and practices.
BTS emphasizes sustainable management of the Sunderban’s fish and honey – critical sources of local income. They advocate for responsible harvesting to prevent ecological imbalance.

Additionally, BTS champions mangrove conservation. Their tree-planting campaigns and educational programs underline the mangroves’ role as a natural defense against climatic threats.
