BAIKUNTHAPUR TARUN SANGHA
Tiklu Jana: From Farming Struggles to Goat Farming Success in the Sunderbans
Tiklu Jana, a housewife from Purba Sripatinagar village, faced immense challenges trying to support her family through farming. With just 15 kathas of land for paddy and vegetable cultivation, she struggled due to poor irrigation, salty soil, and increasing costs. Her yearly income barely exceeded Rs. 8,500.

In April 2023, Tiklu reached out to the Agriculture Development Office at Patharpratima Block for help. Through discussions and training, she decided to venture into goat farming. Starting with 5 Black Bengal goats, Tiklu diligently raised them, and by March 2024, her herd had grown to 9. She wisely used part of her land for fodder production and built a goat shed on another portion.
With her family’s dedicated effort, spending about 3 hours daily, Tiklu turned goat rearing into a commercial enterprise by selling milk and meat. Her total farming income rose to Rs. 14,500 annually.
Tiklu’s resilience not only improved her family’s livelihood but also inspired her community. Baikunthapur Tarun Sangha played a vital role in Tiklu’s success by guiding her and raising awareness about government support available. Their assistance empowered Tiklu to access resources and opportunities, transforming her from a struggling farmer to a beacon of hope in the Sunderbans.
